Same platform. A different approach.

A different approach to NetSuite Planning & Budgeting.

NSPB is a powerful planning platform. How it is architected and implemented determines how well it performs, how easily it adapts, and how much effort it takes to maintain.

VanBuren combines FP&A experience, deep NetSuite and EPM implementation knowledge, and hands-on development, automation and integration engineering to deliver a simpler, more capable planning environment.

Symptoms

Does any of this sound familiar?

An application can be live, supported, and technically working while still delivering very little to the finance team that has to use it.

  • Planners still export to Excel to build the forecast.
  • You can’t report on the attributes you actually manage by: product line, channel, region, customer segment.
  • The revenue forecast can’t see unfulfilled sales orders or revenue schedules.
  • Rolling up multiple entities, currencies, or tiers still ends in a spreadsheet.
  • The integration breaks, runs long, or gets babysat every month.
  • One or two people know how to change anything, and neither of them is in Finance.
  • Reporting hierarchies in NSPB don’t match how leadership reviews the business.
  • The application still looks like the demo, not like your business.
Why it happens

Underperforming NSPB applications usually trace back to three decisions made early in the original project.

01Integration

The integration isn’t bringing in the data Finance needs.

Actuals alone are not enough. Unfulfilled sales orders, revenue schedules and arrangements, open POs, customer and item detail, and operational drivers are usually what separate a reporting tool from a planning platform.

02Data model

The model reflects the chart of accounts, not the business.

Attributes, alternate and multi-tier hierarchies, segmentation, and deliberate dimensional design are what let one application serve statutory reporting, management reporting, and planning at the same time.

03Modernization

The application never evolved with the platform.

Most applications were configured before Advanced Predictions, IPM Insights, and the current generation of AI capability existed. Those are available to you now, and in most cases already paid for.

The data model

What a well built NSPB application contains.

The difference between an application people work around and one they work in is almost always the model underneath it. This is the checklist I work from.

NetSuite data that matters
  • Unfulfilled sales orders and backlog
  • Revenue schedules and arrangements
  • Open purchase orders and commitments
  • Customer, item, and project detail
  • Headcount and position detail
Structure that matches the business
  • Attributes carried through from NetSuite
  • Alternate and multi-tier hierarchies
  • Management views alongside statutory views
  • Entity, currency, and intercompany rollups
  • Segmentation the business actually uses
Logic Finance trusts
  • Driver-based revenue and expense models
  • Workforce planning tied to real positions
  • Capital and depreciation continuity
  • Allocations that reconcile
  • Forms and rules an owner can maintain
Modernization

Built for where NSPB is going next.

Oracle has shipped a great deal into this platform since most applications were built. Some of it is genuinely useful. Some of it is not worth your time yet, and I will tell you which is which.

  • Advanced Predictions

Statistical forecasting run against your history, at the level of detail where it actually holds up, so planners start from a defensible baseline instead of last year plus a percentage.

  • IPM Insights

Automated detection of bias, variance, and anomalies in the plan and the actuals, surfaced before the review meeting rather than during it.

  • Ask Oracle

Natural language access to the application for the people who are never going to learn a web form or a Smart View retrieve.

  • An MCP server for your application

A Model Context Protocol server trained on your NSPB application, so AI assistants answer questions grounded in your dimensions, your hierarchies, and your numbers instead of generic documentation.

Why VanBuren

VanBuren Advisory is led by Jason Wells, who helped create and bring NetSuite Planning & Budgeting to market and later led NetSuite’s EPM Solution Consulting organization.

That experience is applied differently now. Preserve what is working, identify what isn’t, and make targeted improvements without unnecessary rework or layers of consulting staffing. You work directly with the person doing the work, at a rate that reflects a specialist rather than a firm’s overhead.

How I work

Accelerators and templates remove weeks of setup, and I use them. They are a starting point, not a substitute for understanding how your business is managed. A generic model delivered quickly is still a generic model.
